Even The IMF Sees 30 Years Of Neoliberalism As A Mistake

By Erik Sherman, Forbes

In the early 1980s, neoliberalism — the systematic transfer of power from the public to private sectors — seemed to have conquered the world. Milton Friedman declared the “miracle of Chile” as that country, directed by a group of economists who studied with Friedman at the University of Chicago, worked to stabilize inflation, transfer state assets to private hands, lower taxes on business, remove economic controls, reduce restrictions on the movement of capital, and open markets.

In short, the aim was to use increased competition to improve what was available to consumers and to reduce the role of the state. The concept became all the rage and was pushed everywhere by major economists and by entities like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
